Navigating the Waters: Prescription Swim Goggles Explained

Vision can play a big role in how much you enjoy your time in the water, whether you're an avid swimmer or enjoy splashing around on vacation. Prescription swim goggles are a popular option for those who require vision correction. Dr. Gary Gold & Associates breaks down the pros and cons to help you make an informed decision as we approach Healthy Vision Month.

Pros of Prescription Swim Goggles

Clear Vision Underwater

Prescription swim goggles offer the primary benefit of clear underwater vision for swimmers who need corrective lenses. This enhances safety by improving navigation and obstacle avoidance and increasing enjoyment and water sports performance.

Comfort and Convenience

These goggles fit comfortably around your eyes, creating a seal that prevents water from entering while accommodating your prescription. They eliminate the need for contact lenses, which can pose a risk of infection when exposed to water.

UV Protection

Many prescription swim goggles have UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays. This feature is particularly beneficial in outdoor swimming environments.

Customizable

You can tailor prescription swim goggles to various specifications. This includes lens strength and tints to enhance visual clarity and comfort according to your needs.

Cons of Prescription Swim Goggles

Prescription swim goggles can have some disadvantages, which are important to consider. Here are some of the possible drawbacks:

  • Cost: One of the main drawbacks is the cost. Prescription swim goggles are typically more expensive than standard swim goggles due to the customization of the lenses.
  • Limited Style Options: While functional, prescription swim goggles often have fewer style options and may not be as aesthetically pleasing as non-prescription varieties. This can be a drawback for style-conscious swimmers.
  • Fit Issues: Finding the right fit can be challenging, and a poor fit can lead to water leakage or discomfort. It's important to try on several styles and brands to find the best seal and fit for your face shape.
  • Not Suitable for All Activities: While ideal for swimming, these goggles are only suitable for some water activities. For instance, we do not recommend them for diving due to pressure changes at different depths.

Who Should Consider Prescription Swim Goggles?

  • Regular Swimmers: If you swim frequently, especially as part of a fitness regimen or in competitive settings, prescription goggles are invaluable for performance and safety.
  • Children in Swim Lessons: Prescription goggles will benefit young swimmers who need vision correction. They help them see clearly and follow instructions more effectively.
  • Vacationers: For those planning to spend a lot of time in the water on vacation, prescription swim goggles can significantly enhance the experience, making underwater sights more accessible and enjoyable.
